My father was an engineer for an American oil company, and my family lived in an oil camp in Saudi Arabia from 1953 to 1962. I was born in the camp, and I spent my early childhood there. It was a unique and unforgettable experience.

The oil camp was a small, self-contained community. It had its own school, hospital, and commissary. The families lived in small houses, and there was a large recreation center where the children could play. The camp was surrounded by desert, and the only way to get to the outside world was by plane or car.

I have many fond memories of growing up in the oil camp. I remember playing in the desert with my friends, swimming in the pool, and going to the movies at the recreation center. I also remember the many holidays we celebrated, including Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July. These holidays were always a special time, and they helped me to feel connected to my American heritage.

Living in the oil camp also had its challenges. The weather was often extreme, and there were sandstorms and dust storms that could last for days. The camp was also isolated, and I sometimes felt like I was living in a bubble. However, I also learned a lot about different cultures and ways of life. I made friends from all over the world, and I learned to appreciate the diversity of human experience.

I am grateful for the experience of growing up in an American oil camp in Saudi Arabia. It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and it helped me to become the person I am today.
