Karr was born in Texas in 1955. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother was a devout Catholic. Karr's childhood was marked by violence and instability. In Cherry, Karr writes about her addiction with unflinching honesty. She describes the physical and emotional pain that she endured, as well as the shame and guilt that she felt. Karr also writes about the people who helped her to get sober, including her therapist, her sponsor, and her friends.

Cherry is a powerful and moving memoir. Karr's writing is both beautiful and heartbreaking, as she delves into the depths of her own experiences with unflinching honesty. The result is a book that is both a testament to the power of survival and a reminder of the importance of hope.
