Patrick McCauley was born with spina bifida, a birth defect that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite his disability, Patrick was always an active and athletic child. He played wheelchair basketball and competed in track and field. In 2002, Patrick was involved in a car accident that left him a quadriplegic. He was told that he would never walk again and that he would be lucky to regain the use of his arms. But Patrick refused to give up. He worked hard in rehabilitation and eventually regained the use of his arms and hands.

In 2004, Patrick was invited to try out for the US Quad Rugby team. Quad rugby is a Paralympic sport that is played by people with quadriplegia. Patrick quickly proved to be a natural at the sport. He was fast, strong, and had a great sense of the game. In 2008, Patrick helped the US team win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Beijing. He was also named the MVP of the tournament.
