Despite his troubled home life, Lawrence excelled academically. He attended the University of Oxford, where he studied history and archaeology. While at Oxford, he developed a keen interest in the Middle East and its ancient cultures.
Military Career
In 1914, with the outbreak of World War I, Lawrence volunteered for the British Army.
He was initially assigned to the Intelligence Corps and served in Egypt and Mesopotamia (today's Iraq). In 1916, he was transferred to the Arab Bureau in Cairo, where he began to work with Arab leaders who were seeking independence from Ottoman rule.
The Arab Revolt
In 1917, Lawrence was sent to Arabia to support the Arab Revolt, which had been launched by Hussein bin Ali, the Sharif of Mecca. Lawrence played a key role in organizing and coordinating the Arab forces, and he quickly gained their respect and admiration.
Lawrence's military prowess and leadership skills were instrumental in the Arab Revolt's success. He led his men to a series of stunning victories, including the capture of the strategic port city of Aqaba in 1917.
Later Life
After the war, Lawrence returned to England a national hero. He wrote a bestselling account of his experiences, entitled The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which became a classic of war literature.
Despite his fame and success, Lawrence struggled to adjust to civilian life. He suffered from depression and self-doubt, and he often clashed with the British establishment.
In 1922, Lawrence joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a private under the alias John Hume Ross. He served for six years, during which time he participated in a number of archaeological expeditions.
Lawrence died in a motorcycle accident in 1935 at the age of 46. His death was a national tragedy, and he was buried with full military honors in St. Martin's Church in Wareham, Dorset.
The Legend
