On January 22, 1944, the Allied forces launched an amphibious assault on the beaches of Anzio, Italy. The goal of the operation was to capture the port city of Rome and knock Italy out of the war. However, the Germans were well-prepared for the invasion, and the Allies faced fierce resistance.

The Battle of Anzio was one of the bloodiest and most costly battles of the war. Over 30,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded, and the fighting dragged on for months.
Despite the heavy losses, the Allies eventually prevailed, and Rome was liberated on June 4, 1944. The victory at Anzio was a major turning point in the war, and it helped to pave the way for the eventual Allied victory in Europe.
Four American soldiers who fought at Anzio were awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroic actions. These men—Bernard Adelstein, Elmer Burr, Clarence Craft, and John Dillard—risked their lives to save their comrades and help secure an Allied victory.
Bernard Adelstein was a 22-year-old private first class in the 3rd Infantry Division. On January 23, 1944, Adelstein's unit was pinned down by German fire while advancing on the beachhead. Adelstein crawled forward and single-handedly knocked out two German machine gun nests, allowing his unit to advance.
Elmer Burr was a 24-year-old sergeant in the 3rd Ranger Battalion. On June 1, 1944, Burr's unit was attacking a German pillbox when Burr was shot in the leg. Despite his wound, Burr continued to fight, and he eventually destroyed the pillbox with a hand grenade.
Clarence Craft was a 23-year-old private first class in the 15th Infantry Regiment. On January 22, 1944, Craft's unit was pinned down by German fire while advancing on the beachhead. Craft charged forward and knocked out a German machine gun nest, allowing his unit to advance.
John Dillard was a 22-year-old private first class in the 15th Infantry Regiment. On January 22, 1944, Dillard's unit was pinned down by German fire while advancing on the beachhead. Dillard charged forward and knocked out a German machine gun nest, allowing his unit to advance.
The stories of Adelstein, Burr, Craft, and Dillard are an inspiring reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought in World War II. Their actions helped to secure an Allied victory at Anzio, and they continue to inspire us today.
