Born in Hiroshima in 1930, Fumiko grew up in a warm and loving family. However, her idyllic childhood was shattered by the outbreak of World War II. As the war intensified, Hiroshima became a target of relentless air raids, and Fumiko's family was forced to seek shelter in an underground bunker.

On August 6, 1945, the unthinkable happened. The atomic bomb exploded over Hiroshima, killing an estimated 140,000 people and reducing the city to ashes. Fumiko, then just 15 years old, was miraculously spared, but her life would be forever changed.

In the aftermath of the bombing, Fumiko witnessed firsthand the unimaginable suffering of her fellow citizens. Horrified by the devastation and the loss of so many innocent lives, she vowed to dedicate her life to working for peace.

Fumiko's journey led her to the United States, where she met and married Bob Fujita, a Japanese-American soldier who had also served in World War II. Together, they raised a family and became active in the peace movement.

Fumiko shared her story with countless audiences around the world, speaking out against nuclear weapons and advocating for peace and understanding. She also established the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Fund, which has raised millions of dollars to support peace education programs.

In her memoir, So Other People Would Be Also Free, Fumiko recounts her extraordinary life story with candor and compassion. She shares her memories of pre-war Hiroshima, the horrors of the atomic bomb, and her subsequent journey as a peace activist.

Fumiko's story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Despite the trauma she endured, she never lost hope. She dedicated her life to building a better future for all, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
