Fannie Lou Hamer was a civil rights activist who fought for the right of all Americans to vote. She was born in 1917 in Mississippi, a state where black people were denied the right to vote. Hamer was a sharecropper when she first became involved in the civil rights movement. She was inspired by the work of Martin Luther King Jr., and she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1962.

Hamer quickly became a leader in the civil rights movement. She helped to organize voter registration drives and she spoke out against the violence and discrimination that black people faced in the South. In 1964, Hamer was beaten by police officers while she was trying to register to vote. This incident helped to raise awareness of the struggle for voting rights in the South, and it inspired Hamer to continue her work.

In 1965, Hamer was elected to represent Mississippi at the Democratic National Convention. She was the first black woman from Mississippi to attend the convention. Hamer spoke out against the exclusion of black voters from the Democratic Party, and she demanded that the party do more to support voting rights. Her speech was a powerful indictment of racism and discrimination, and it helped to raise awareness of the need for voting rights reform.

Hamer continued to fight for voting rights until her death in 1977. She was a tireless advocate for justice and equality, and her work helped to make the United States a more democratic society.
