Mowat was born in 1777 in the town of Stirling, Scotland. He joined the British Army in 1794 at the age of 17. He was commissioned as an ensign in the 42nd Regiment of Foot, also known as the Black Watch.

Mowat's first taste of combat came at the Battle of Corunna in 1809. He fought with distinction in this battle and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He went on to fight in a number of other battles during the Peninsular War, including the Battle of Salamanca and the Battle of Vittoria.

In 1815, Mowat was promoted to the rank of captain and transferred to the 92nd Regiment of Foot, also known as the Gordon Highlanders. He fought with this regiment at the Battle of Waterloo, where he was severely wounded.

Despite his wounds, Mowat survived the battle and went on to serve in the British Army for another 10 years. He retired from the army in 1825 with the rank of major.

Mowat was a highly decorated officer. He was awarded the Military General Service Medal with eight clasps for his service in the Napoleonic Wars. He was also awarded the Free Download of the Bath for his gallantry at the Battle of Waterloo.

Mowat died in 1856 at the age of 79. He is buried in the churchyard of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Mowat's life and military career are a testament to the bravery and dedication of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. He was a true hero who served his country with distinction.

Mowat's Military Legacy

Mowat's military legacy is still alive today. He is remembered as one of the most decorated officers of the Napoleonic Wars. His name is inscribed on the Waterloo Memorial in Brussels, Belgium.

The 42nd Regiment of Foot, in which Mowat served, is still in existence today. The regiment is now known as the Royal Highland Regiment (The Black Watch). The 92nd Regiment of Foot, in which Mowat also served, was disbanded in 1881. However, the regiment's history and traditions are carried on by the Gordon Highlanders.
