An Intimate Portrait of the Rough Rider

by Michael Cooper

Theodore Roosevelt On Horseback, Leading The Rough Riders Up San Juan Hill Theodore Roosevelt (Up Close) Michael L Cooper

Theodore Roosevelt was a man of contradictions. He was a Rough Rider who charged up San Juan Hill, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. He was a conservationist who loved to hunt, and a trust-buster who fought for the common man. He was a Republican who admired Woodrow Wilson, and a Democrat who supported Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Cooper's book is not a traditional biography. It is more of a character study, focusing on the key moments and relationships that shaped Roosevelt's life. Cooper shows us Roosevelt as a young boy growing up in New York City, as a Rough Rider fighting in Cuba, as a governor of New York, as a president leading the country through war and peace, and as a conservationist working to protect the nation's natural resources.

He also shows us Roosevelt's flaws, his arrogance, his impulsiveness, and his occasional bouts of depression.

Cooper's book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand Theodore Roosevelt. It is a rich and nuanced portrait of a complex and fascinating man.
