Henry Darger was one of the most unique and enigmatic artists of the 20th century. His vast body of work, which includes thousands of paintings, drawings, and collages, is a testament to his vivid imagination and outsider perspective.
Darger was born in 1892 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the youngest of seven children, and his family was very poor. Darger's father died when he was four years old, and his mother remarried a few years later. Darger's stepfather was abusive, and Darger often ran away from home to escape the violence.
In 1908, Darger was committed to the Illinois Asylum for Feeble-Minded Children. He was diagnosed with dementia praecox, a form of schizophrenia, and spent the next 15 years in the asylum.
While at the asylum, Darger began to develop his own unique artistic style. He used a variety of materials, including paper, cardboard, and fabric, to create his works. Darger's paintings and drawings are often filled with vibrant colors and intricate details. He also created a series of collages, which he called "The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion." This work is a sprawling epic that tells the story of seven young girls who are kidnapped by a group of evil men. The Vivian Girls are rescued by a group of angels, and they eventually defeat the evil men.
Darger's work was not discovered until after his death in 1973. His landlord, Nathan Lerner, found Darger's artwork in his apartment and contacted art critic Phyllis Kind. Kind recognized the importance of Darger's work, and she helped to organize a posthumous exhibition of his art. Darger's work has since been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. He is now considered one of the most important outsider artists of the 20th century.
