The Early Years

The story of the Sulzbergers and The New York Times begins in the late 19th century, with Adolph Ochs, a young immigrant from Germany. Ochs worked his way up the newspaper ranks, eventually purchasing the struggling Times in 1896.

Under Ochs's leadership, the Times became a respected voice in American journalism. Ochs instilled in the paper a commitment to objective reporting and a belief in the power of the press to hold those in power accountable.

The Sulzberger Era

In 1935, Ochs's son-in-law, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, took over as publisher of the Times. Sulzberger continued his father-in-law's legacy of journalistic excellence, while also expanding the paper's reach and influence.

Under Sulzberger's leadership, the Times became a global media empire, with a presence in print, radio, and television. The paper also played a leading role in some of the most important events of the 20th century, including the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.

The Modern Era

In 1992, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., known as Punch, became publisher of the Times. Punch has continued the family tradition of journalistic excellence, while also navigating the challenges of the digital age.

The Sulzberger family has now been at the helm of The New York Times for over a century. During that time, they have witnessed some of the most significant events in American history and have played a vital role in shaping the nation's discourse.

The Sulzbergers' story is one of triumph, adversity, and enduring legacy. It is a story that is both fascinating and inspiring, and it is a story that is still being written today.
