The Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts Infantry was the first all-Black regiment in the Union Army during the Civil War. This book tells the story of these brave soldiers and their fight for freedom and equality.

The Fifty-Fourth was organized in February 1863, in Boston, Massachusetts. The regiment was made up of free Black men and escaped slaves from all over the country. The men were led by white officers, but they were determined to prove that they were just as capable as their white counterparts.

The Fifty-Fourth saw its first combat at the Battle of Fort Wagner, South Carolina, in July 1863. The regiment charged the fort with bayonets fixed, and they were nearly wiped out. But their bravery inspired the rest of the Union Army, and it helped to turn the tide of the war.

The Fifty-Fourth went on to fight in many other battles, including the Battle of Olustee, Florida, and the Battle of Honey Hill, South Carolina. They were always outnumbered and outgunned, but they never gave up. They fought for their freedom and for the future of their country.

The Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts Infantry was disbanded in August 1865, after the end of the Civil War. The soldiers returned home as heroes, and they were greeted with parades and celebrations. But they knew that the fight for equality was not over. They continued to work for civil rights and social justice throughout their lives.
